VIUF Immigration Group invites you to join us at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma every 2nd Saturday. Contact Melvin Mackey for details, as meeting times can vary each month (see below).
We show up according to whether the second Saturday is an even or odd day. Visitors are coming to see their loved ones and they have to show up at the correct time when their loved one can receive visitors. The visiting hours are different for felony detainees and those who have only committed minor offenses. We vigil when the minor offenders are being visited. There are many more of these detainees.
- On odd days, such as May 13th, we catch the 11:20 AM ferry from Tahlequah, and leave NWDC about 3:00 PM, and catch the 3:40 PM return ferry from Point Defiance to Vashon.
- On even days, such as June 10th, we catch the 8:00 AM ferry from Tahlequah, and leave NWDC about noon, and catch the 12:35 PM ferry.
You can drive separately or join a carpool.
Melvin will drive his pickup truck and bring a canopy (rainy days), card table, four chairs, the Standing on the Side of Love Banner, signs, our notebook, a couple of shirts to loan to visitors who can’t meet the dress code, cookies and two thermoses of hot coffee, cream and sugar. Melvin has room to carpool with two more people. Contact him if interested.
