When is killing justified and when is it murder? Are terrorists and rebels combatants or criminals? What does it mean to be Humanitarian? Are there limits to war? How can suffering be reduced in war and other humanitarian crises? What do Clara Barton, Julia Ward Howe, Charles Darwin, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Florence Nightingale and Olympia Brown have in common? The UU Theme for the month of May is “Stories” and the UU Voices Team explores the stories of pioneers who translated their Unitarian principles into action which changed the world. Kate O’Hare MD and Ann Lewis, instructor in International Humanitarian Law will present the stories of Clara Barton and her leadership in the dynamic social changes of the 19th century led by many UU theologians and Foremothers. Barton’s story links our principles to the nascent Geneva-based Red Cross Movement, establishing the first (and still largest) international NGO, which is dedicated to reducing suffering in armed conflict and natural disasters.
