What does it mean to be an Ally, what is Allyship?

What does it mean to be an Ally, what is Allyship. More specifically what it means to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.

Ally
A person or group that provides active assistance and support in an ongoing effort, activity, or struggle, is often now used specifically of a person who is not a member of a marginalized or mistreated group, but who gives support to that group.

On Sunday, June 7th, we will talk about what it means to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community here on Vashon and across the world.

Several VIUU members and guests will speak on their own experiences with being an ally to someone in the LGBTQ+ community or an LGBTQ+ person speaking on having an ally who has supported them in some way.

By definition, allyship is;

Allyship
Allyship is the continuous, active practice of using one’s privilege, power, or systemic influence on support, advocate for, and stand in solidarity with marginalized or underrepresented groups. It is an ongoing action rather than a passive label or identity.
